Cold snap checklist
Winter nights in the valley freeze pipes. A few minutes now saves a burst line.
- Find your main shutoff. Know where the main water valve is and turn it once to make sure it works.
- Drain the outside. Disconnect hoses and shut off exterior spigots before the first hard freeze.
- Insulate the cold spots. Wrap pipes in crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls.
- Let faucets drip. On a very cold night, open cabinet doors on exterior walls and leave a faucet dripping.
- Keep the heat on. If you leave town in winter, keep the thermostat no lower than about 55 degrees.
